What is the Pitts21 Braces System?
Braces are braces, right? At a glance, it may seem that way, especially if you’re looking at metal braces. That’s not quite true though, even amongst metal braces. The Pitts21 braces system is different from traditional braces. Never heard of it before? Here at Maccaro Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, it’s our go-to option for those who find metal braces to be the best choice for them.
How Pitts21 Braces Work
The Pitts21 braces system is a system of self-ligating braces. That means that the brackets of the braces have a mechanism that holds the archwire in place. Like other types of braces, the Pitts21 braces system uses pressure to shift the teeth into their ideal alignment. They can also be used to adjust your bite, addressing any malocclusion you may have.
The Benefits of the Pitts21 Braces System
Pitts21 braces have a few different benefits that they offer. Patients with the Pitts21 braces system may find that they don’t have to wear the braces for quite as long. They may be more comfortable as well. This is in part because of their smaller size and smoother, more rounded corners and in part because less pressure is needed to move the teeth. You may find that Pitts21 braces are easier to clean thoroughly. Patients often find that they need to attend fewer maintenance follow-up appointments too.
How Pitts21 Braces Differ from Traditional Braces
The self-ligating capacity of the Pitts21 braces system is perhaps the biggest difference between them and traditional braces. Because the brackets themselves are capable of holding the archwire in place, there is no need for elastic bands. The lack of elastic bands is part of what makes the Pitts21 braces easier to clean. Elastic bands can be great places for bacteria and plaque to develop. Without the elastics, there is less risk of that happening, which means the wearer is less likely to develop cavities, given the same level of oral care is practiced.
When you’re doing something as impactful as getting braces can be, it pays to know what your options are and some of the details concerning each one. It’s easy enough to distinguish between Invisalign, ceramic braces, and metal braces, but less so between traditional metal braces and the Pitts21 braces system. Remember, you can always see Dr. Maccaro for an orthodontic consultation to get all your questions answered.
